Rhodes shines in conference play, defeating Transylvania 7-1

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Rhodes field hockey team opened its Southern Athletic Association conference play with win Saturday over Transylvania University by a margin of 7-1.
 
The Lynx move to 1-4 on the young season, and 1-0 in conference while the Pioneers fall to 2-3 overall, and 0-1 in the SAA.
 
Rhodes saw seven different players get into the scoring column.  Kate Taylor opened up play with an unassisted goal at the 12 minute mark. Regan McLaughlin wasn't far behind, scoring a goal just two minutes later, again unassisted. Rhodes' Jordan Kugler made the score 3-0 in the 33rd minute before Transy scored their lone point in the final two seconds of the first half from the stick of Kayla Thurlow.
 
Rhodes scored four unanswered goals in the second half. Julie Hertzman converted a McKenna Wilson assist in the 41st minute. Mackenzie Busby then turned a Hertzman pass into a score at the 45 mintue mark. In the 48th minute Christina DiFelice connected on a Evy Royther pass to make the score 6-1. The final goal came from the stick of Mary Rose Hazel as she scored in the 61st minute from a Kat Simpson pass.
 
Both of Rhodes goal keepers saw action with Kelly Whelan earning 35 minutes and Erin Bailey also getting 35 minutes of play in.
 
Rhodes outshot the Pioneers by a huge margin of 38-3, and took seven more corners than the visitors.
 
The Lynx will be back in action Sunday at noon as they take on conference foe's Centre College at home.
