Rhodes completed their Easter Invitational/VFW Benefit Games today dropping a pair to Emory and one to visiting Fontbonne.
In Game 1 of the day, Rhodes took to the field to complete a suspended game from Saturday. Emory and Rhodes resumed the Saturday slugfest tied at 7 in the top of the 6th inning. After a quick 6th and 7th innings, the Lynx and the Eagles entered into extra frames, utilizing the international tie-breaker in the top of the 8th inning. In the top inning, with a runner placed on second base, Emory was able to strike once thanks to a double to center field, pushing the score to 8-7. In the bottom half of the inning, Rhodes placed a runner of their own on second base, with hopes of equaling or better the Eagles effort, but it was not to be. With a runner on third base, Rhodes was retired, dropping the contest 8-7.
In game 2 on the day, Rhodes returned to action against the Eagles, eager to avenge their previous loss. Rhodes scored first in the 2nd inning when
Rachel Pewitt drove in
Jessica Brown on a triple down the left field line; Pewitt was later scored on a SAC fly from
Courtney Williams, making the count 2-0 in favor of the home team. Emory responded with 1 run in the top of the 3rd before both teams would struggle to score any more runs. However, in the 5th inning, the Eagles found their offense and plated 3 runners to regain the lead at 4-2. In the 6th inning, Emory pushed 3 more across to stretch the lead to 7-2. With time running out on the Lynx, in the bottom of the 7th,
Katie Stich drove a 2 run single to left field bringing the score to 7-4, but Rhodes would get no closer, dropping the second game of the series, 7-4.
In game 3, Rhodes faced Fontbonne, the preseason favorite to take the SLIAC conference. Fontbonne scored 2 runs in the top of the 1st inning to jump out to a quick lead. However, in the bottom of the 1st the Lynx responded with 2 runs of their own off the bat of the team's leader in runs batted in,
Makenzie Martin. Martin's blast tied the contest until the Griffins added a run in the 3rd to take a narrow advantage. Despite having runners on base throughout the contest, 1 run would prove to be too much to overcome for the Lynx as they stranded runners on second and third in the bottom of the 7th to fall to Fontbonne, 3-2.
Rhodes returns to action this weekend when they face Sewanee in SAA play.
