Game Recap: Softball |

Rhodes Softball Splits Day One of SAA play with Centre

Game one saw the Centre College bats come alive as Rhodes' pitching was battered giving up 9 runs over 7 innings.   Although the Lynx struck first with 1 run in the bottom of the 2nd inning, Centre quickly responded with a 3 run homerun in the top of the 3rd to take the lead.   In the bottom of the frame, Rhodes offense responded plating 2 runs to even the score, 3-3, but the score didn't stay knotted for long.  In top of the 5th inning Centre hit another 3 run homerun, taking a 6-3 lead.  The Lynx again responded, this time with 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th and 1 run in the bottom of the 6th to deadlock the contest for a second time.  But Centre's offense would not be denied, scoring 3 more runs in the top of the 7th, cementing their win, 9-6.  Forrest Skelton took the loss for Rhodes College despte striking out 10 Centre batters.  Offensively for Rhodes, the loss overshadowed another excellent game at the plate for Lynx slugger Jessica Brown.  Brown was 3-4 with 2 doubles, 2 runs scored and 2 runs batted in.

In game two, Centre hitters appeared to pick up where they left off scoring 2 runs in the 1st and 2nd innings to jump out to a 4-0 lead.  It wasn't until Danielle Smith's solo shot in the bottom of the 3rd that the Lynx finally got on the scoreboard, pulling within 3 of the Colonels.  The 4th inning for both squads was scoreless and in the 5th Centre got back the run the previously lost to again push the lead to 4, at 5-1.  In the bottom of the 6th innings, with rain clouds finally clearing and sunshine peaking through for the first time, Rhodes' offense settled in and went to work.   Jessica Brown started the assault on Colonel pitching with a monster solo homerun, her 4th homerun of the season.  The next two batters for Rhodes reached safely before Courtney Williams delivered an RBI single to left field bringing the score to 5-3.  With two runners on base, Centre walked the bases loaded and then walked in a Lynx runner to narrow the Centre lead to 5-4.   With the based still juiced, Megan Matthews hit a ball up the middle that the pitcher was unable to handle cleanly and Rhodes scored another run to tie the score at 5-5.  After a pitching change for the Colonels, Makenzie Martin came to the plate and smacked a bases clearing double to give the Lynx an 8-5 advantage.  Next in the 6th, Rachel Pewitt would slap a single to right field to score Martin and increase the lead to 9-5.  Centre was able to score 1 run in the top of the 7th inning but that would be all as the Lynx earned a 9-6 behind pitcher Chloe Hundman.  Offensively for Rhodes, several individuals recorded multiple base hits - Erin Parker (2-3 with an RBI and a run scored), Jessica Brown (3-4 with a homerun, an RBI and a run scored) and Rachel Pewitt (2-3 with an RBI and a run scored),

Tomorrow the Lynx return to the diamond at 11:00am and 1:00pm - a change to the schedule.
