Trailing by two points in the final seconds, Rhodes guard
Andrew Galow knocked down a game winning three-point field goal with 1.8 seconds remaining to lift the Lynx past the Birmingham-Southern Panthers on Sunday, February 3rd. After Birmingham-Southern guard White missed a pair of free-throws with 21 seconds remaining, Rhodes senior captain used a stutter step to freeze the defense and rose up, connecting on a 25 foot three-point field to give the Lynx a 58-57 lead with 1.8 seconds remaining. A last second heavy from the Panthers fell short as the Lynx went on to victory and jump back atop the Southern Athletic Association Conference standings.
Rhodes grabbed a quick 2-0 lead on a Galow layup and would not look back over the first twenty-seven minutes and ten seconds of the contest. The Lynx were able to push their lead to as many as seven in the first half, and took a 36-32 lead into the break. Birmingham-Southern's transition offense and inside play from forward Richards, 14 first half points, combated the Lynx attack of the paint.
With 12:50 remaining in the second half, the Panthers grabbed their first lead of the game on a Henry layup, 43-41. Birmingham-Southern was able to push the lead to as many as five points, but the Lynx were not going down without a fight. A three-point field goal by junior Mike Gallagher pulled the Lynx to within one with 6:27 remaining in the contest, 51-50.
Points were hard to come by over the final six minutes as each team tightened up their defense and looked to land the final blow. Behind by four points with 26 seconds remaining, Galow knocked down a pair of free-throws for the Lynx to close the gap to two points. After a pair of missed Birmingham-Southern free-throws, the Lynx had a chance to tie or take the lead. The panthers switched a high ball screen and Rhodes senior captain
Andrew Galow did the rest. A quick stutter step froze the panther's defender and Galow rose up and connected on a 25-foot three-point field goal to give the Lynx a 58-57 victory.
Rhodes forward
Theo Hartwell and Birmingham-Southern forward Zach Richards went back and forth against each other in the paint. Richards had a game-high 22 points on 9-11 shooting, while Rhodes Hartwell finished with a team-high 15 points on 6-7 shooting, adding 6 rebounds. Scoring the last five points for the Lynx,
Andrew Galow chipped in 13 points, but three of the most important in the game. Sophomore forward
Geoff Livsey added a double-double for the Lynx with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
The win puts the Lynx back atop the SAA conference standings, in a three-way tie for first place with Birmingham-Southern and Centre. Rhodes (13-8, 8-2) will be back home this coming weekend as they play Berry College (4-17, 1-9) on Friday at 8pm and Oglethorpe University (14-7, 6-4) on Sunday at 3pm.
