Rhodes connected on all fourteen of its free-throw attempts over the final 1:46 to defeat the Millsaps Majors on Friday, February 1st by a score of 65 - 61. A layup by senior
Theo Hartwell put the Lynx up by nine points with 4:44 remaining before the Majors put together one last run. Millsaps senior Cortese attempted to put the Majors on his back scoring ten points over the remainder but the Lynx stood tough.
Andrew Galow finished the night 10-10 from the free-throw line, including the last two to put the game out of reach.
The Lynx used a first half 13-0 run over nearly ten minutes to grab their first lead of the contest, 25 - 16. A three-pointer by Millsaps cut the lead to 25-19 at the intermission. Defense was the name of the game as the Majors shot 35% from the field, while the Lynx were only able to manage 37%.
Rhodes pushed the lead early in the second half and looked as though they were in command with 14:22 remaining and the Lynx up by 12 points. A 9-0 run by Millsaps, capped off by a layup by Gulligan saw the game close to 35-32. Over the remaining nine minutes of the contest it seemed as though either team was able to stop the other.
A small 6-0 run by the Lynx with 4:44 left, saw the Lynx lead by nine. Millsaps attempted one last stand over the last four minutes, but ten points from Millsap's Cortese was not enough to complete the comeback. Rhodes was clutch at the free-throw line, connecting on its final fourteen attempts at the line and 25-31 (81%) for the game. Cortese finished with a game-high 24 points for the Majors.
Offensively, the Lynx were paced by
Andrew Galow, who finished the night with a team-high 23 points, including 10-10 from the charity stripe. Senior
Theo Hartwell and Junior Mike Gallagher also chipped in with 12 and 11 points respectively.
Rhodes (12-8, 7-2) will be in action again on Sunday afternoon at Birmingham Southern College (15-4, 8-1) at 4:00pm. Similarly to the meeting on January 20th, first place in the Southern Athletic Conference will be on the line.
