Rhodes Comeback Falls Short, Shares SAA Title With Centre

After an opening seventeen minutes that Rhodes would like to forget, the Lynx stormed back to push Centre College to the brink on Sunday, February 17th, but a last second shot fell short as the Centre Colonels defeated your Rhodes Lynx 76 to 74.  Trailing by as many as 25 points in the first half, the Rhodes men clawed themselves back into the ball game and kept the result in question until the final buzzer.  The result puts Rhodes and Centre in a tie for the 2012-13 SAA conference championship with a record of 11-3.

Centre opened the game burning the nets, as three-point field goals were going in from all over the floor.  Colonel's guard Josh Karsner scored a game-high 14 first half points, including 4 for 8 from the three-point line.  Centre opened the gap to as many as 25 points with 3:14 remaining in the half until the Lynx made their first run.  Rhodes connected on three three-point field goals over the remainder of the half and was able to cut the Colonel lead to 16 at the break, 39-23.  Centre shot 47% from distance, going 9-19 at the intermission.

Rhodes would not back down and continued from where they ended the first half.  Lynx guard Drew Miller sparked the Lynx offensively with 22 second half points, scoring from all over the floor.  With over eleven minutes remaining, the Lynx had climbed back within six points and had all the momentum.  Miller finished the night with a game-high 27 points, including 6 rebounds and 5 steals.

Big mid-range jumpers from Centre's backcourt of Ellis and Taylor saw the Colonels keep Rhodes at bay.  Centre's backcourt each connected on three 12-15 foot jumpers, scoring 17 and 11 points respectively.  Nevertheless, It looked as though the Lynx were not to be denied.  Senior Andrew Galow's offense started heating up and sophomore forward Geoff Livsey connected on a three-point field goal with 14 seconds remaining that cut the Centre lead to one.

After Centre's Taylor went one and one from the free-throw line, the Lynx had one last opportunity to win the game and conference championship outright.  After Galow attacked the paint and could not find an angle to finish, he kicked it out to Miller who got a look at three for the win.  Miller's three fell just short and the rebound was batted out to Rhodes McGrail, but was unable to get a shot up before time expired.  Centre defeated Rhodes 76 to 74 and the outcome resulted in a split conference championship for the two teams.

Galow and Livsey each scored 15 points for the Lynx, while starters Patrick McGrail and Theo Hartwell chipped in with 9 and 8 points respectively.  Karsner led Centre in scoring with a team-high 26 points, while Ellis and Taylor were the other Colonels in double digits.

Although the Lynx finish in a tie for the regular season SAA championship with Centre, due to tie breakers the SAA conference tournament will be held at Centre College in Danville, KY.  The Rhodes men finished the regular season with a record of 16 wins and 9 losses, while going 11-3 in the Southern Athletic Association.  The Lynx will begin their conference tournament championship run on Friday against Millsaps College, more details will follow.
