Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Rhodes Defeats Oglethorpe At The Buzzer

With 9 seconds remaining, Rhodes senior Andrew Galow went coast to coast and connected on a turnaround three-point field goal as time expired to give the Lynx a 52-49 victory over the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels on Sunday, February 10th.  Down by two points with 9 seconds remaining, Oglethorpe found Sam Purdy underneath the hoop, who connected on a layup to tie the game at 49.  Rhodes inbounded the ball to their senior captain and Galow did his magic once again.  When Galow was not allowed inside the paint, he pulled it back and spun baseline into a 23 foot three-pointer.  The buzzer sounded right as the ball cleared the net, and Rhodes went on to win 52-49.

Rhodes opened the contest on Sunday with a 13-3 run over the first 8 minutes to take an early lead and it looked as though Oglethorpe was going to struggle to score for the full forty minutes.  It was the bench that sparked the Stormy Petrels, as Courson and Patrick came in and scored 17 of Oglethorpe's first half 21 points.  Rhodes held Oglethorpe's starting five to just four points and the team to 33% shooting from the field at the half.  The Lynx led 22-21 at the break.

Each offensive continued to struggle in the second half, as neither team would be able to grab a lead larger than two possessions.  Oglethorpe took the lead for the first time with 4:52 remaining on an offensive rebound and three-point field goal by Purdy.  Purdy finished the night with 9 points for the Petrels.  Rhodes and Oglethorpe continued to go back and forth down to the wire.  Down 2 with 29 seconds remaining, Oglethorpe worked the ball and found Purdy underneath the hoop to tie the game at 49 with 9 seconds to go.  Rhodes inbounded to Galow and the rest is history.  Galow drove it hard down the right side of the floor, and connected on a turnaround three-pointer from the right wing as the buzzer sounded.

Galow lead the Lynx once again with a game-high 15 points, while adding 4 rebounds and 4 assists.  Senior forward Theo Hartwell and sophomore guard Drew Miller chipped in with 13 and 11 points respectively.  The Lynx shot only 39% from the field, but held Oglethorpe to 35%.  Oglethorpe was led off the bench by Courson who scored a team-high 15 points.

Rhodes improves its record to 15-8 and 10-2 in the SAA conference as it heads into the last weekend of competition.  Rhodes will face rival Sewanee (16-7, 7-5) on Friday at 8pm and against conference co-leader Centre College (17-4, 10-2) on Sunday at 3pm.  Sunday's contest will determine the SAA conference champion and which team will host the SAA conference tournament on February 22nd-24th.
