Rhodes keeps streak alive, beats Southwestern 64-56

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Rhodes women's basketball squad grabbed their first win on their road trip over Southwestern University, 64-56 on Saturday night.
 
Coach Matt Dean's squad maintains their unblemished record, moving to 6-0 while the loss moves the Pirates to 2-6 to start their season.
 
Symone Daniels led the way for the Lynx, as she opened the games scoring with a layup in the opening seconds of the contest. Rhodes would utilize the scoring momentum, to open the match with an 11-2 run with a pair of Lauren Avant and Dy'nelle Todman buckets. The Lynx reached their largest lead of the half at the 6:14 minute mark when Sarah Johnson knocked down a three to give Rhodes the 24-11 advantage. Rhodes would take in a 36-24 lead into the halftime break.
 
Leaders for the Lynx in the first half of action included Daniels with 10 points, Avant added nine and Todman scoring eight. Rhodes shot 43 percent from the field while holding the Pirates to just 28 percent shooting. The Lynx also had three, three pointers in the first half.
 
The Lynx continued to improve in the second half, going on an 8-2 run to open play with two layups for Todman and a pair of scores from Avant to make the count 44-28. The 16 point lead at the 15:58 mark would prove to be the largest Lynx lead of the night. The Pirates cut down their deficit to seven, 51-44, after a Chelsea Leeder three pointer with just under nine minutes to play. Rhodes' defense held strong and held off the Southwestern charge, closing out the contest 64-56.
 
The Pirates were led by Annie Bourne, who had 17 points and eight rebounds, followed by Jordan Owens who added 13 points.
 
Rhodes was led by Daniels for the first time this season, as she put up a game high 21 points. Daniels added six rebounds and two blocks to her totals. Todman was the next highest Lynx scorer, putting up 17 points with seven rebounds and two steals. Avant earned her second double-double of the season, scoring 15 points and adding 11 rebounds in the outing. Avant also came away with four steals and one assist.
 
Rhodes shot over 42 percent on the game, and knocked down five three pointers. The Lynx defense wreaked havoc and their offense capitalized, scoring 21 points off turnovers. Rhodes held the Pirates to 36 percent shooting for the game. The Lynx fought a hard battle in the paint, ultimately outscoring the Pirates in the lane, 38-34.
 
The Lynx will continue their road trip as they make their second stop at Austin College on Sunday Dec. 15 as they face the Roos' at 3 p.m.
