Lead by four players in double figures, the Rhodes Lynx used a second half rally to defeat the Millsaps Majors on Friday, January 18th, 70 to 61. A last second three-pointer by Millsaps Murray Kastner saw the Lynx fall behind by seven points at the break. However, Rhodes responded in the second half with solid defensive and a large advantage on the glass. A three-point play by
Theo Hartwell pushed the Lynx lead to 14 points with 5:04 to play, and Rhodes held on for victory 70 to 61.
Millsaps came out firing in the first half, connecting on 15 of its first 26 shots (57.7%) to grab an advantage. Early on the Majors were able to extend the lead to 11, but the Lynx reeled them in slightly before the break. A three-pointer at the buzzer by Majors guard Murray Kastner had the Lynx behind by 7 at intermission. Kastner lead the Majors with 18 points, including 5 for 5 from distance.
Opening the second half with a 10-2 run, saw the Lynx grab their first lead of the game with 15:22 remaining. A more patient Lynx attack resulted in distribution and four Lynx in double figures. Theo Hartwell saw the Lynx grab their biggest lead of the night at 14 points with 5:04 remaining. Hartwell finished the night with a game-high 18 points and chipped in 6 rebounds.
Rhodes inside presence was undeniable, as the Lynx attacked the paint and crashed the offensive glass. A 40-24 rebounding advantage and paint points keyed Rhodes success. Sophomore forward
Geoff Livsey and reverse forward
Tate Sledge joined the party with Hartwell. Livsey finished with a double-double, 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Sledge added 9 points and six rebounds. Combined with Hartwell, Rhodes post presence scored 38 points and grabbed 22 rebounds.
A better second half defensive enough saw the Lynx hold Millsaps to 25% shooting from the field and only 23 points. Millsaps Gilligan added 10 points as the Majors other double digit scorer. Rhodes held on to defeat the Millsaps Majors 70 to 61.
Senior guard
Andrew Galow and junior guard Mike Gallagher were the other Lynx players in double figures for the night. Galow chipped in with 14 points, 12 of which were in the second half, while Gallagher sparked the Lynx off the bench with 13 points, 3 of 5 from three. Although sophomore guard
Drew Miller did not score in his first career start, he was a factor other places with 7 rebounds and a game-high 4 assists.
Rhodes (10-6, 5-0) will be back in action on Sunday, January 20th inside the friendly confines of Mallory Gym against Birmingham Southern College (12-3, 5-0) at 3pm. The game with clash the top two teams in the SAA Conference, each looking to claim the top spot.
