Rhodes Women's soccer upset #8 Centre College in SAA action today. The Lynx ended a 15 game unbeaten streak for Centre.
With the win the Lynx improve to 11-3-1 (5-1) and into a 3 way tie for 1st place in the SAA with Birmingham-Southern and Centre.
Rhodes scored first on a free kick from sophomore
Kelsey Keown in the 25th minute. The Lynx almost added a 2nd goal when senior
Shannon Blair's shot was saved and then cleared off the Colonels goal line. Both teams would battle through the first 45 minutes but the score line stayed the same.
In the 2nd half, the tables turned as Centre came out aggressive and created good scoring opportunities. Centre found their breakthrough in the 63rd minute when Alex Combs scored off of a corner kick. Again, both teams created more scoring opportunities, but the scored finished 1-1 in regulation.
The 1st OT period was more of the same with both programs trading scoring opportunties, but nothing too dangerous.
The 2nd OT period would prove to be full of drama. In the 108th minute the Lynx earned a corner kick. Keown's corner kick found the head of senior
Beth Ann McCloskey for the game winner.
Allison Cowling played all 109 minutes for the Lynx making 3 saves. Holly Hilton made 3 saves for Centre.
Centre held the advantage in corner kicks 7 to 4 and a slim edge in shots 11 to 10.
Rhodes will round out the regular season next weekend as they travel to Hendrix College and Lyon College.
