Lynx Triumph on Senior Day

MEMPHIS, Tn.- The Lynx field hockey squad earned an exciting victory today in a 3-2 overtime win over Division II Bellarmine University at home.  Kat Simpson led off the scoring with a beautifully executed breakaway goal just 14 minutes into play.  Neither team was able to find the cage of the cage for the remainder of the first period, despite several close opportunities.

Bellarmine came out strong in the second half, tying the game 1-1 just our minutes into play.  Katie Faucher answered back with an unassisted goal less than ten minutes later on the aftermath of a Rhodes penalty corner.  Bellarmine maintained intensity and again tied the game 2-2 with just eight minutes remaining.  Both teams fought hard for the victory in the final minutes of regulation but at the end of 70 minutes the score was still locked 2-2. 

Overtime was back and forth with both teams generating several goal scoring opportunities.  In the 8th minute of overtime play, the Lynx finally capitalized.  The game winning goal was scored by sophomore Mackenzie Holland who earned the tally in impressive fashion.  After the Knights earned an offensive penalty corner, Holland stopped the shot and distributed up field to Katie Faucher who carried the ball through the midfield and into the Lynx offensive circle.  Laying out a perfect pass to goal, Holland nailed home her second game-winner this week.  Bellarmine out shot Rhodes 23-17 and held a 15-13 advantage in penalty corner opportunities.  Rhodes goalkeeper, Jordan Robinson had her best game of the year to date earning 14 saves in 78 minutes of play.

The Lynx honored four seniors with the win; Katie Faucher, Sarah Ferguson, Marie Mason, and Jordan Robinson, who all had stellar games and were key to earning the victory.  Rhodes (11-4, 7-0 SAA) will travel to Sewanee for their last regular season conference game on Sunday, the game is scheduled to begin at Noon.
