Rhodes ends up on the wrong end against the Centre College Colonels on Friday night, February 18th. An uninspired first half left the Lynx fighting to stay in the game, but managed to get to the locker room only down eight points. The first ten minutes of the second half was a different story as the Lynx looked like the team they have been over the last three contests. Rhodes captured the lead 40 to 39 and were able to hold on to it for a few minutes, but the offense stalled with 9:00 minutes remaining and the Lynx could not hold on to the victory. Rhodes fell to Centre 59 to 51.
The Lynx that showed up in the first half was different that they team that has won their last two and three of the last four. Rhodes looked uninspired and not ready to fight against the Colonels. Early jumpers by Andrew Galow kept the Lynx at striking distance, but the attitude and toughness was going to have to improve for the Lynx to have a chance at victory. Galow scored 10 points in the first half, finishing the contest with 19.
Something sparked the Lynx at the break and they were able to wake up from their slumber. Freshmen Michael Gallagher and Shane Watson gave great energy off the bench and were main contributors in the team's transformation. Watson attacked the rim and was able to get to the free throw line, while Gallagher hit some big shots to give Rhodes their first lead, 40 - 39.
Rhodes pushed the lead to 42 - 39 with nearly nine minutes remaining, but it was short lived. The Lynx struggled coming down the stretch scoring only 3 more points in the next eight minutes. Centre turned it up a notch, led by Sophomore Greg Ross who lived at the free throw line over the remainder of the game. There was no final spark offensively for the Lynx as they could not take the lid off the hoop. Centre defeated Rhodes 59 to 51.
The Lynx will have to wait and find out their fortune for the conference tournament on Saturday. The University of the South plays Oglethorpe in a must win game for the Tigers. If the University of the South loses, your Lynx will punch their ticket to the post season. If the University of the South wins, your Lynx must pull out the victory on Sunday against DePauw to start dancing.
