The Rhodes Lynx started hot, taking an early seven point lead in the first ten minutes in Saturday January 8th's contest against Birmingham Southern. However, a 21 - 2 run covering the last 10:08 of the first half was too much for the Lynx to overcome. Birmingham Southern ended up defeating Rhodes 70 to 56.
Rhodes came out firing as they held a seven point lead, 22 - 15, ten minutes in. The Lynx were able to handle the Panthers full court pressure and worked the basketball for open opportunities on the offensive end. Freshman guard Johnny Dunavant sparked the Lynx with eight quick points.
A switch flipped in the last ten minutes of the first half, as the Lynx lacked poise against the pressure and found themselves in foul trouble. Birmingham Southern created opporunitisic turnovers and converted them into easy points. A 21 to 2 run pushed the Lynx down 12 going into the locker room. Point guards Andrew Galow and Shane Watson both finished the half with three fouls.
In the second half, the Lynx showed their competitive edge as they battled back. With 8:45 seconds left, Freshman guard
Patrick McGrail hit a huge three-point field goal from the corner to cut the deficit to 4 points, 50 - 46. That was as close as the Lynx would get.
Rhodes was led offensively and defensively by Freshman Johnny Dunavant. He finished the night scoring 16 points and held Birmingham Southern's star, Jonus, to a season low two points.
With the loss, the Lynx fall to 3 - 9 on the season, and 0 - 5 in the SCAC. Rhodes will be in action Tuesday night at 7pm against the University of Dallas. With a win on Tuesday the Lynx would square up their non-conference record at 4 - 4.
