The Rhodes Lynx logged their first conference victory of the year tonight, Saturday January 29th. It was a long time coming, but the Lynx broke out of their 0 - 8 start in conference play to defeat the Pirates of Southwestern University 71 to 63. The win marks the first in the conference for new Head Coach Mike DeGeorge.
Everything did not go perfect for the Lynx tonight, but it was truly a great team effort. Rhodes came out of the gates strong and other than a six minute stint at the end of the first half controlled the tempo and style of play. At that point, the Lynx held a 9 point lead with around 6:00 remaining in the first half, only to let the Pirates claw back in it. A late three pointer by Southwestern's Cantu tied the game at 36 heading into the break.
Heart and determination pushed the Lynx through the second half of a double header. Each and every player fought and stayed composed, only doing what they were capable of. Rhodes pushed their lead to six at 63 - 57 with 5:00 minutes remaining in the game and it looked as the nightmare of the first half might return. It did not, as Freshman guard Johnny Dunavant knocked down a big three point field goal with 1:18 on the clock to give the Lynx a 66 - 61 advantage.
Down the stretch, the Lynx clawed out some big offensive and defensive rebounds and Southwestern had no choice but to foul. Rhodes knocked down a few free throws and celebrated their 71 - 63 victory. The win keeps Rhodes in play to go to the conference tournament and puts a big target on their rivalry game at Sewanee next Sunday.
Rhodes was lead by Senior Josh Arant, Sophomore Andrew Galow, and Freshman Johnny Dunavant; each scoring in double figures. Josh added seven rebounds, 3 of which were offensive.
The Lynx will be in action on the road against Olgethorpe and Sewanee on Friday and Sunday respectively. Remember that live webcasts will be available to watch the Lynx when they are traveling.
