Field Hockey Wins Opener 3-2

Sarah Kennedy

The Lynx field hockey team prevailed 3-2 over Randolph Macon College today in Newport News, VA.  The Lynx scored first on a tip by senior Libby Feaster which was assisted by Lindsey Gurkovich.  Rhodes then followed with a second goal on a penalty stroke by senior captain Charlie Wagner.  Randolph Macon found the back of the cage on their first shot of the day to pull within one goal before halftime.  The Lynx came out strong after the break, controlling the first part of the second half and putting in a third goal by Libby Jones on a scramble around the goal mouth. Randolph Macon tallied a second half goal and continued to test the Lynx defense but Rhodes held on strong for the win.  Marie Mason played a stellar game at center defender while Sarah Kennedy and Lindsey Gurkovich held down the middle.  First year players Regan McLaughlin and Sam Anscher were key on defense as was junior sweeper Sara Sanders.  The Lynx out shot RMC 14-5 and enjoyed a 6-5 advantage in penalty corner opportunities.  Rhodes faces preseason #12 Christopher Newport tomorrow at noon.
