Southwestern University defeated Rhodes College 3-0 in the SCAC opener. The Pirates jumped to a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute off a counter-attack goal by Alex Keller. Rhodes came right back, only to have their golden opportunity cleared off the line. Less than ten minutes later, the Pirates would cushion the lead to 2-0 after capitalizing on a Rhodes turnover, as Matthew Nickell found the back of the net. Both teams saw chances as the half ended 2-0 in favor of the visitors.
Southwestern continued their fast pace in the second half, resulting in a third and final goal off of a long throw in by Alex Keller just under 20 minutes into the half. The Pirates would play solid defense the rest of the game, securing the 3-0.
Rhodes drops to 3-2-3 on the season and 0-1 in SCAC play. Rhodes will host conference foe, Trinity University on Sunday at 10:30 am.
