Men's Soccer Opens Up 2010 Season with 2-2 Tie

Rhodes College ties Lyon College in home opener

Senior Nick Bailey nets his first goal of the season
The Rhodes College Men's Soccer team opened up the 2010 campaign with a 2-2 tie against NAIA competition, Lyon College. The Lynx went up 1-0 on the Scots in the 36th minute with a tally from senior forward, Nick Bailey. Freshmen defender, Patrick Harris, picked off a pass in the Rhodes defense and was able to quickly counter, finding the streaking Bailey who tucked the ball passed Lyon keeper, Matt Kelly. Rhodes College went into the half up 1-0.

Lyon was able to knot the score up at 1-1 on a penalty kick converted by center midfielder, Robert Hall, in the 59th minute. Lyon quickly jumped on a Rhodes turnover and found the back of the net just 24 seconds later, as Daniel Young put the Scots up 2-1. Rhodes showed a lot of fight, and rebounded to level the game at 2-2 in the 79th minute. Senior Brett Simek calmly placed the ball in the back of the net off a penalty kick. The game finished in a 2-2 draw. No overtime was played due to lack of light.

Rhodes moves to 0-0-1 on the season, while Lyon goes to 1-0-1. Rhodes College hosts the Greg Volgas Memorial Tournament this weekend. The Lynx will battle Principia College Saturday, September 4th at 4:00 pm, and turn around to take on Webster University September 5th at 4:00 pm.
