It took overtime for the Rhodes Men to claim the win tonight, November 28th, against Rust College. Rhodes led by two with 4.7 seconds left in the game, as the Rust Bearcats pushed the basketball fullcourt and scored as time expired to send the game to overtime tied at 67. In the extra period, the Lynx were able to control the tempo and get out in front. Free throws in the last minutes capped the win for the Lynx and gave Head Coach
Mike DeGeorge his first home court victory at Rhodes.
Rhodes struggled defensively in the first half, giving up 38 points on 50% shooting from the field. The offensive, on the other hand, scored 37 points and looked much more patient than the previous night. Rhodes was led at halftime by Freshman Johnny Dunavant with 10 points. Rust was paced by Markeith Wilson with 11 points at the break.
In the second half and overtime, the Lynx played inspired defensively giving up only 35 points in 25 minutes. Coach DeGeorge said, "Today was obvious of the energy and intensity that we need to sustain for 40 minutes every time we step on the floor. I am proud of the guys for the way that they battled and fought back on the second night of a doubleheader."
Sophomore Andrew Galow sparked the Lynx in the second half by getting into the paint and making free throws. Galow finished the night with 28 points and 6 rebounds, while going 14 for 18 from the line. Off the bench, Freshmen Johnny Dunavant and Michael Gallagher shot it well from three-point range adding 20 and 11 points respectively. The Rust Bearcats were led by Junior guard Jahrell Holmes pacing them with 20 points.
The Rhodes Lynx head into SCAC conference play on the this weekend with games against both Centre and DePauw on the road.
