Lynx Men & Women Fall to Petrel Rallies

1/3/2010 8:46:00 PM

Playing on the road against SCAC foe Oglethorpe, the Rhodes men and women each carried leads into the final 4 minutes of the game, but each team fell victim to Petrel rallies, with the men losing 61-55 and the women losing 70-69.   The women fall to 7-5 (1-3 SCAC) and the men fall to 6-6 (1-3 SCAC).  Both teams return to action on Saturday, when they host the Panthers of Birmingham Southern.  Tip off is set for 3:00pm for the women with the men's game to follow.

The Lady Lynx led 34-28 at the half, and after a back and forth second half, regained a 6 point lead at 58-52 on a layup by Olivia Ryan with 6:38 remaining.  The Petrels began their rally, slowly chipping away at the Lynx lead, tying the score at 60 with 3:55 remaining.

The teams traded buckets for the next 2 minutes, before the Petrels regained the lead for good on a pair of free throws to make it 66-65 with 1:46 remaining.  Trailing by 4 with 30 seconds remaining, Rhodes mounted a late rally of their own when Becky Atnip drained a 3 to bring the score to 70-69.  Becca Clarin and LaKeya McGill then cranked up the defense in the last 20 seconds, each coming up with a steal to give the Lynx 2 chances to win the game in the last 10 seconds, but the shots would not fall.

Unfortunately for Coach Hilgeman and the Lynx, the script was much the same for the men's game.  The Lynx led by 5 at the half, and extended their lead to as many as 11 in the second half, leading 39-28 with 14 minutes remaining in the game.  The Petrels outscored the Lynx 11-2 over the next 4 minutes, but the Lynx held off the rally, clinging to a 50-45 lead with 5:12 remaining.   The Petrels then hit a pair of threes in the next minute to take a 51-50 lead with 4:07 remaining, a lead they would never relinquish.

The Lynx were led by Larry Cunningham with 16 points, while Reid Hamilton notched 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
