Rhodes Opens 2010 with SCAC Road Victory

1/2/2010 12:33:00 AM

Sewanee, Tennessee ~ Rhodes started the 2010 year right where 2009 ended, with a victory.  The Lynx traveled to the University of the South tonight and came away with a SCAC road victory thanks to a solid defensive effort, holding the Tigers to just 19.7% shooting for the game.

After Sewanee scored the first four points of the game, Rhodes scored the next 12 thanks in a large part to stellar defense.  In the run senior Andyshea Saberioon (Houston, TX) grabbed three steals leading to six points, including his own old fashioned three point play that gave Rhodes the lead that they never relinquished.  Nate Ollie (Memphis, TN) returned to the lineup and nailed his first three point attempt giving the Lynx a 15-5 lead with 12 minutes to play in the first half.  Sewanee cut the lead to four but Kory Kilpatrick (Athens, GA) scored 7 of the next 9 Lynx points to extend the lead back to double digits.  A jumper by senior Reid Hamilton (Birmingham, AL) pushed the Lynx to 17 points and the Lynx would head into the locker room at the half with 14 point lead at 35-21.

Andrew Galow (Oswego, IL) nailed a three pointer to start the second half, and two free throws by Saberioon extended the lead to 19.  Kilpatrick scored four straight points as the Lynx pushed the lead to 23 and the Lynx never let up.  A Hamilton layup with 6:47 left in the half gave the Lynx a 24 point lead and a three pointer by Kilpatrick made the lead 65-35 with just 2:55 left to play.  A back door layup by senior Andrew Galow (Oswego, IL) closed out the Lynx scoring and the Lynx finished off the game with a dominating 67-42 victory.

For the game, the Lynx were lead by Kilpatrick's double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds.  Hamilton and Saberioon each scored 13 points for the Lynx.  Hamilton also grabbed 9 rebounds and Saberioon grabbed 7 steals.  The Lynx defense was stingy all night as they held the Tigers to 19.7% from the field and 20% from the three point line.  With the victory, Rhodes raised its overall record to 6-5 and its SCAC record to 1-2.  Rhodes will be back in action on Sunday as they travel to Atlanta, Georgia to take on Oglethorpe University with a 3pm tipoff.
