Memphis, Tennessee ~ Rhodes College Men's basketball got a victory today against visiting Oglethorpe University, 89-83. The win marked the first time the Lynx have won back to back games in the SCAC this season. The victory raised the Lynx record to 10-14 overall and 5-9 in conference play.
The first half was fast paced for both teams and competitive. It featured 8 ties and neither team had a lead larger than 5 points. Rhodes continued its hot shooting from the field going 16-34 (47%). Despite the good shooting, the Lynx were never able to gather a lead larger than 3 points. A jumper by
Reid Hamilton (Birmingham, AL) with just under a minute gave Rhodes a 42-40 lead heading into the locker-room after 20 minutes of action.
Rhodes started the second half with a 13-2 run to open up a 13 point lead, but Oglethorpe slowly chipped away at the lead and tied the game at 62-62 with 12 minutes to play. Two free throws by
Cory Smith (Bartlett, TN) would put the Lynx up 6 at the 9 minute mark but it would be tied for the 13th time with four minutes to play.
Justin Long (Little Rock, AR) knocked down two free throws that gave the Lynx the lead for good at the 3:37 mark. Two more free throws and a steal by
Joe Thompson (Nashville, TN) pushed the lead to four points with 35 seconds to play, and Smith would make four straight free throws end the game.
On the afternoon the Lynx had four double digit scorers, led by Smith's 27 points.
Jared Hoskins (Rossville, GA) shot 50% from the 3pt on his way to 24 points. Thompson added 8 rebounds to go along with his 10 points. Hamilton would pitch in 10 points and 7 rebounds. Freshman
Nathan Ollie (Memphis, TN) chipped in nine points and 3 assists. The Lynx were led in rebounding by Long's 11 rebounds, and out rebounded the Stormy Petrels 32-28.
The Lynx close out the regular season this coming Saturday (February 23rd) in Birmingham, AL versus Birmingham Southern College. Tip off is scheduled for 5:00 pm. Then Rhodes is off to Conway, AR for the SCAC conference tournament February 28th – March 1st. Game times are still to be deteremined.
