Team Rhodes Raises Money to Fight Cancer Through St. Jude's Heroes

MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College athletic department participated in the constant fight against cancer as they fundrasied through St. Jude's Heroes in this past weekend's St. Jude's Marathon Weekend races.

Team Rhodes is comprised of 126 Rhodes students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of the college. At St Jude's, no family ever pays for treatment as it takes over $2 million dollars a day to run the hospital located in Memphis, Tenn.

This year alone, Team Rhodes raised $66,000 as part of the $8.2 million raised through the Heroes program overall. The marathon weekend is the top fundraising event for St. Jude's every year.

The top fundraiser this year was Athletic Director Mike Clary, contributing $4,400 followed by head field hockey coach, Jane Wells, with $3,000. Assistant volleyball coach Cameron Andrew was fourth, contributing $2,100. 

The entire volleyball team participated in the 5k and fundraising while the field hockey team raised the most money with lead contributions rom Mackenzie Busby ($1,800), Morgan Woodrow ($1,640), and Abby Rockefeller ($1,580). 

Assistant cross country coach Brandon Dworak won the half marathon with a time of 1:08.21 (pace of 5:14), only four minutes off the course record. The top student runner was senior field hockey student-athlete, Mary Rose Hazel, with a time of 1:50.57.

This is the third year Team Rhodes has participated in the efforts to defeat cancer. In three years, Team Rhodes has raised over $200,000. Fundraising is always encourage in the fight against cancer.
