3.15.2010 | Softball
Rhodes Softball used a couple of big innings to notch 2 more wins this evening in Cocoa Beach, and improved to 16-4 on the season.  In a 12-4 win over Delaware Valley, Rhodes scored 6 runs in the bottom of the 6th to blow open a 6-4 game and cruise to a mercy-rule win.  In game 2, Rhodes trailed Mt. Ida 4-3 in the bottom of the 5th, but put up 9 runs in the 5th for another 12-4 mercy-rule win.

For the second consecutive week, Sara Bowen has been selected the SCAC Softball Pitcher-of-the-Week for her performances in games played from Monday, March 1 through Sunday, March 7.

Behind a 5-hit shutout from Chelsea Peters, Rhodes knocked off Division II Minnesota-Crookston 3-0 in the second game of their Spring Break trip in Cocoa Beach, FL.  Peters struck out 6, did not walk a batter and did not allow a Golden Eagle runner to reach third base en route to her 4th shutout of the season.  Rebekah Moore was 2 for 3 with an RBI to lead the Lynx offense.

Rhodes Softball opened its 2010 Spring Break trip with a 9-0 win over Finlandia Univesity this morning in Cocoa Beach, FL. Sara Bowen, Elise Suna and Olivia Ryan delivered home runs and Kelli Zomer was 3 for 4 to lead the Lynx offense. Bowen improved to 5-2 on the season, tossing a 1-hit shutout and striking out 15. Rhodes will play Division II University of Minnesota-Crookston at 3:00pm.

Rhodes got no-hitters from Cindy Bitters and Sara Bowen, and 5 different players homered this afternoon as the Lynx swept a pair of games from Blackburn by scores of 8-0 and 8-0.  For Bitters, who improved to 2-0, it was the first no-hitter of her career, while Bowen improved to 4-2 en route to the 5th no-hitter of her career.  Kelli Zomer, Allison Conn, Rebekah Moore, Olivia Ryan and Bowen each had home runs to lead the Lynx offense.

3.7.10 | Baseball
The Rhodes baseball team defeated Blackburn College 18-6 at Stauffer field this afternoon.  Rhodes spotted the Beavers 2 runs in the top of the first but were able to answer back with 4 in the bottom of the inning and put the game away with a 6 run second and 4 run third.  Sophomore Brian Lainoff picked up his second victory of the season, as the Lynx improve to 10-3 on the year.

3.7.10 | Softball
Rhodes swept a pair of games from Berry and Lagrange this afternoon by scores of 6-5 and 10-3, improving to 8-4 on the season.  In game 1, the Lynx trailed 3-0 in the 6th, but for the 3rd consecutive game, came up with the big hits and forced extra innings.  Elise Suna's 2-run double in the bottom of the 6th capped a 3-run inning that tied the score, and Megan Matthews singled in Jennifer Whatley in the 9th to seal the come from behind win. In game 2, Suna homered twice, including a grand slam, to lead the Lynx to a 10-3 victory.

The Rhodes Softball team used a couple of late-inning rallies to notch a pair of wins Saturday, defeating Millikin University and Berry College each by a score of 5-4.  In game 1 verses Millikin, Kelli Zomer capped off a 3-run 7th with a walk-off single to lift the Lynx to victory, and in game 2 Megan Matthews played the role of hero, capping a 3-run 6th inning to give the Lynx a come from behind 5-4 win over Berry College.

The Rhodes College baseball team split today's double header with #14 Marietta College.  Rhodes lost the first game 3-0, before defeating the Pioneers 4-3 in 10 innings in the second game.  Junior Chris Conkell drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th on a sacrifice fly to right field scoring junior Kyle Peterson.  Sophomore Austin Carden picked up the loss for the Lynx in the first game and freshman John White got his first collegiate victory in the second game.  Rhodes is now 9-3 on the year.

The NCAA recently announced the fall recipients of the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and Rhodes Andy Boucher was one of thirty-seven honorees.  Andy has a 3.93 cumulative grade point average in Neuroscience and plans to attend medical school.   In football he started at free safety and he's also the starting 2nd baseman on the Lynx baseball team.  Andy has volunteered at the Presley Trauma Center and he's performed internships at Campbell's Clinic and St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.

The Rhodes College baseball team defeated NAIA opponent Union University this afternoon at Stauffer Field.  Rhodes took an early 1-0 through after three and stretched it to 4-1 after five and put the game away with a five run bottom of the seventh.  Junior Hunter Chandler collected his first victory for the Lynx, as Rhodes improved to 8-2 on the year.

Erik Campbell
Men's Swimming
The Student Athlete Advisory Committee has named sophomore Erik Campbell as the Student Athlete of the Month for February.
 
Campbell set 7 School records at the SCAC Championships, finishing 3rd overall in the 200 Fly, 4th overall in both the 200 Freestyle and 500 Freestyle, and in the 4x100 relay, he broke the Rhodes 100 Freestyle record. 
 
 
In addition, he swam on 3 different relay teams that set the school record.
Susanna  Kirby
Women's Swimming
The Student Athlete Advisory Committee has named freshman Susanna Kirby as the Student Athlete of the Month for February.
 
On the second day of SCAC Championships, Susanna had an amazing day, breaking the Rhodes 400 IM record with a 4:37.77, earning her 2nd place in the race and a “B” Nationals cut.
 
Kirby also finished in 6th place in both the 200 IM and 200 breaststroke and was also a member of 4 relays, leading the Lynx to a 5th place overall finish in the SCAC.
