Coach Herb Hilgeman and his wife, Beth

This past Friday evening, prior to the Rhodes vs Millsaps men’s basketball game, Herb Hilgeman was recognized for becoming the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference all-time winningest men’s basketball coach.  On November 16, 2009 Rhodes defeated Principia 89-51 to earn Coach Hilgeman his 464th victory.  Cliff Garrison, the legendary former head coach at Hendrix, held the previous record of 463 wins.

“It was great to honor Herb on Friday evening.  A number of his former players were in attendance to honor him, which was great,” said Lynx Director of Athletics Mike Clary.   “Herb has been an inspiration to our student-athletes, staff and fans for thirty-four years.  He’s truly a legend at Rhodes.”

After trailing Millsaps 30-22 at the half, the Lynx played outstanding defense in the second half to limit the Majors to 23 second half points and earn a 58-53 victory garnering Coach Hilgeman his 471st win.
