Lynx Softball Takes Series from Rival Tigers

The Rhodes College Softball team hosted their rivals, the Sewanee Tigers, this past weekend in a 3 game conference series. The weekend began on Friday with a single game followed by a Saturday doubleheader to conclude the series.

The Lynx scored the first run of the weekend in game 1 thanks to an RBI double from Quinn Thompson that scored Savannah Russell in the bottom of the 3rd. Sewanee would come back to take the lead, and the Lynx would not put up another run until the bottom of the 7th when Quinn Thompson produced yet another RBI hit, this time scoring Madison Wehrman and tying the game up at 2-2. This would send game 1 to extra innings, but not for long, as Harper Allee-Press stole home in the bottom of the 8th to walk off the Tigers. Lynx starter Gina Dudley turned in a masterful complete-game performance in which she struck out 3 and only allowed 2 earned runs. This gave Rhodes the victory by a score of 3-2 and a lead in the series going into the double header.

Game 2 saw the Tigers take an early 2-0 lead, but the Lynx bats came alive in the bottom of the 4th after Emma Caplinger stroked a double to drive in Madison Granberry. Granberry would come to the plate in the bottom of the 5th with runners in scoring position, and she capitalized by delivering a 2 RBI single and giving the Lynx their first lead of the game, 3-2. From there, Emily Pertuit took the ball in relief and shut down the Tigers, tossing 3.0 shutout innings. This allowed the offense to extend their lead thanks to RBI singles from Harper Allee-Press and Madison Bromley. Complimentary softball brought the Lynx their second victory of the series in a 6-2 contest.

Rhodes was looking to sweep in game 3, but the Tigers put up a fight as they plated 6 runs, a margin that would prove to be too much for the Lynx to come back from. The Lynx scratched across 3 runs of their own, however, as Katie Bejian led the way with 2 RBIs in the game. Other notable players include Emma Caplinger and Athena Gonzales, who each recorded 2 hits. Game 3 would result in a 6-3 Lynx defeat, but the Lynx had already won the series over their conference rivals.

The Lynx will look to continue their success into the week as they square off against LeMoyne-Owen College in a single-game midweek contest on Wednesday (April 3) at 3 p.m.
