Memphis - In a game riddled with Lynx injuries, Rhodes College softball fell to Birmingham-Southern 6-1 Sunday. Rhodes is now 16-7 overall and 4-1 in conference. BSC is 13-6 and 4-2.
First baseman
Leslie Matherne made three terrific defensive plays in the loss. First, the freshman caught a foul pop fly in the fifth inning at the fence directly next to the BSC dugout for the second out with a runner in scoring position. She then ended the inning on a line drive on the very next batter. She also caught a line drive in the following inning for the second out with a runner in scoring position.Â
BSC got off to a 4-0 lead after a three-run home run to center and back-to-back doubles. In the bottom of the second, pitcher
Lauren King doubled to left field. With two outs,
Shannon Tierney singled up the middle. The shortstop made the diving stop near the second base bag as Tierney stepped on first and fired home to try to make a play on King. Tierney then went to second, but came off the first with the first injury for Rhodes. Tierney, the designated hitter, was replaced in the batting order by third baseman
Samantha Feinstein, the flex.Â
A leadoff triple in the fourth, followed by a sac bunt scored BSC's fifth run. In the bottom of the inning,
Kendall Henry stole second and collided with the shortstop. Henry then switched positions with Feinstein, moving from catcher to third base. BSC scored their final run in the sixth after a single to left field found its way to the wall on a Lynx fielding error.
Haley Rath tried to get things going for Rhodes in the bottom half of the sixth with a triple down the right field line. Rhodes ended up stranding two after Henry was hit by a pitch.Â
The Lynx are on the road for a while, travelling to Millsaps, Maryville College, and Sewanee. Rhodes returns to Memphis to host Blue Mountain College in a doubleheader on April 11.
