Memphis - Rhodes College softball fell behind early against LeMoyne-College (LOC) on a gorgeous Thursday afternoon, but pulled through with nine runs in the final three innings to win game one. The Magicians struggled at the plate in game two while Rhodes took an early lead and both teams made it through four and a half innings in an hour and 10 minutes to have a complete game as the sun was setting.
The Lynx defense, who hadn't played a game in 12 days, struggled early, allowing LOC to lead 6-3 after three innings. The visitors advanced their lead by three runs when Rhodes earned five runs in the sixth inning after taking advantage of four Magician errors and two hits, including a double by
Kirsten Samuels.
Jamie Jang came in to pitch for the Lynx, making her collegiate debut. She earned her first strikeout and got out of the inning without allowing a run.
Haley Rath led off the bottom of the seventh for Rhodes and after she singled and stole second, went to third on a groundout by
Anna Kula.
Jill Healy came through with the sacrifice fly. At the end of seven, the game was tied 9-9.
In the eighth LOC scored on a wild pitch and the Lynx brought
Allison Long back to the circle, but the Magicians were able to cross one more run to take an 11-9 lead. Long was placed on second to begin the bottom half of the inning and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Kayla Rose. Long was held at third when
Peyton Clark singled, but both were driven home on a single by Samuels to left field.
Samantha Feinstein went for the bunt with runners on second and third and LOC fell for the trick, throwing to first base to allow Clark to tie the game. That's when
Caroline Sutton finished the game on a walk-off sacrifice fly to score Samuels.
Samuels finished game one with three hits on four at-bats. She scored three times and drove in three runs. Long struck out nine in seven innings of work.
The sun was already beginning to set as the teams started round two around 4:40 p.m. These innings went much faster due to some serious pitching from junior
Bri Maniscalco for Rhodes as well as some intentional runners leaving the base early. She struck out the first two batters she faced and struck out the side in the third inning before totaling 12 K's in five innings of work. The Lynx scored all of their runs in the second, beginning with a triple by Sutton who earned three RBI with two outs. Clark then walked and Samuels singled as di
Kendall Henry for two more runs for the Lynx. That's when Rhodes began leaving the bases early to finish the inning without compromising any offensive statistics.
For the next two innings, anytime the Lynx would get on base, that player would intentional leave early to get a game of five innings in before it became too dark.
All games for the rest of the weekend, Feb. 17-18, have been cancelled with all of the rain threats. Rhodes' next game is currently scheduled for Hendrix. The Lynx will begin SAA play Feb. 24th.
