CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Despite being the only team to play three games in one day, the No. 3 seeded Rhodes College softball team put together an unbelievable effort all day, coming-from-behind to defeat Centre before close losses to Millsaps and Hendrix eliminated the Lynx.
Though a win early in the day was expected to push the Lynx into Saturday, it ended up being a swan song for senior
Christine Hume, whose unbelievable heroics gave the Lynx a win over Centre as well as tying the game late against Hendrix.
The Colonels took a 2-0 lead early on in the first game of the day, but Rhodes made it a 2-1 game in the third behind a RBI ground out from sophomore
Kendall Henry. The Lynx struggled to get much going throughout the game as they remained down a run in the bottom of the seventh.
In the seventh, senior
Caroline Sutton and sophomore
Jill Healy each singled to make it first and second with no outs. Sophomore
Bri Maniscalco put down a beautiful bunt to put two in scoring position for Hume, the SAA Player of the Year.
Hume worked the count and belted a two RBI single to right field, scoring two runs and give the Lynx a thrilling 3-2 win to move them on to a matchup with Millsaps.
Hume was 2-for-4 win the game with two RBI and a run scored while Sutton was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Henry added a 1-for-2 game with a RBI. Maniscalco was excellent, earning the complete game win.
Against the Majors, a game that was scheduled at 2 PM, but started at 4 due to weather, the two teams battled in a low scoring pitching duel between Maniscalco and Millsaps' Kayla Davidson. Millsaps got on in the first, but Rhodes responded with a RBI single from Sutton to tie it. The Majors got one more in the third and held that lead to a 2-1 victory.
Maniscalco was excellent again, pitching six complete and striking out two while only allowing four hits; however, Sutton and junior
Kirsten Samuels had the only hits.
An already exhausted Lynx squad prepared to turn around for their third game of the night, and despite starting their day at 10 AM, prepared to battled the Hendrix Warriors at 6 PM, immediately following the Millsaps game due to the weather earlier in the day.
Rhodes fell behind 3-0 through five, but continued to battle forward and eventually evened the game at three thanks to a three run home run from Hume in the top of the sixth. However, the emotions spent from a long day of softball may have proved to be too much as Hendrix scored two in the sixth and held on for the 5-3 win to advance to Saturday.
Hume was 2-for-3 with three RBIs including the home run while Sutton was 2-for-3 and freshman
Kayla Rose added a hit. Freshman
Shannon Tierney got the start, allowing only two hits while Maniscaclo pitched the final inning.
Rhodes' season ends at 22-21 despite a great season that included earning the No. 3 seed as well as the SAA Player of the Year and nine all-conference selections.
