MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College softball team put together a successful opening weekend as they finished Sunday afternoon off with a doubleheader sweep over Oberlin College to move to 6-0 on the young season.
The Lynx had to battle to earn the perfect weekend, falling behind 4-1 through two innings as junior
Christine Hume was the only one able to get on the board thanks to a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the fourth, freshmen
Kendall Henry and
Katelynn Bresler each reached on singles. With two outs in the inning, freshman
Karrah Flores stepped to the plate and doubled into right center, scoring both runs to make it a 4-3 game.
Freshman
Jill Healy reached on a walk to start the bottom of the fifth while senior
Erin Parker singled, eventually putting the two runners on second and third with only one out. Hume would fly out to center for a sac fly to tie in at four while Henry and senior
Rachel Pewitt hit back-to-back RBI doubles to push Rhodes ahead 6-4.
However, Oberlin answered in the top half of the sixth, scoring a pair of runs to tie the game at six. In the bottom of the seventh, Parker led the inning off with one out with an infield single and moved to second on a bad throw. Hume would step up and lace a single into right, scoring Parker, and giving Rhodes a 7-6 win.
Hume finished 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs while Henry went 2-for-3 with a RBI and two runs scored. Flores added a 2-for-3 day including her huge two RBI double while Parker had a pair of hits and two runs scored. Parker and Healy each had a stolen base.
Freshman
Bri Maniscalco moved to 2-0 on the season, pitching a complete game with four strikeouts and only allowing six hits on the afternoon.
In the second game, Rhodes ran out to a 2-0 lead in the first behind a RBI double from Pewitt, but Oberlin answered back with two runs in the second to tie things up. RBIs from Parker, Hume, and Henry, as well as a double steal from Pewitt and Hume, pushed Rhodes ahead 6-2 in the bottom of the second.
That would be all the scoring needed as sophomore
Caroline Reilly shut the Yeoman down, finishing with a complete game with three strikeouts and only two earned runs allowed. She moved to 3-0 on the season.
Parker finished 3-for-3 at the plate with a RBI and two runs scored while Hume and Pewitt was 1-for-1 with a RBI. Healy and sophomore
Kirsten Samuels each had a run scored while freshman
Kylle Cahill-Patray had a hit off the bench.
The Lynx move to 6-0 on the season and will get ready to open conference play next weekend as they travel to Birmingham-Southern for a three game series. The series is set to begin on Saturday with a doubleheader slated for 12 PM.
