In one of their best performances this season, the Rhodes field hockey team captured the SCAC Championship with a 4-0 shutout against Centre College (11-8, 4-4 SCAC). With the victory, the Lynx became the first team in SCAC field hockey history to earn three consecutive SCAC titles. Four different Lynx players contributed a goal in the contest to secure the victory, with the game-winner coming just over ten minutes into the game on a fast break by
Chelsea McLeod and
Kat Simpson.
The Colonels had several great pushes but an outstanding performance by defenders
Sara Sanders,
Regan McLaughlin, and goalkeeper
Jordan Robinson thwarted 14 shot attempts and nine penalty corner opportunities. The Lynx were relentless on the attack, capitalizing on four of 19 shots. The Lynx second goal of the game was off the stick of senior
Taylor Mills, with a well-executed lift to the far post. Leading 2-0 at the half, Rhodes continued to persist on offense with a third goal by
Katie Faucher which was assisted by
Libby Jones with 28 minutes left to play. The final tally for the Lynx was the result of a penalty corner where
Sarah Kennedy and
Regan McLaughlin connected to find the back of the cage in the 58th minute of the game.
Rhodes finished out their 2011 schedule with an overall record of 11-6, 7-1 in SCAC. Today's victory also broke the single-season scoring record with a collective 60 goals on the season; surpassing the 58 set by last year's record breaking campaign. The Lynx have also won their last 16 consecutive home games, dating back to 2008.
The team will await NCAA selection for an opportunity to earn a bid into this year's tournament.
