The Rhodes College baseball team won their second game in the 2nd annual Wilson/Demarini Classic this afternoon defeating LaGrange College 11-5 in Jackson, MS. The game remained close for the first three innings, Rhodes used a 3 run top of the fourth to take a 7-3 lead. Then expanded their lead to 9-3 in the fifth. Rhodes then put up two more in the seventh for a 11-3 advantage. LaGrange put up a run in the eigth and ninth for a 11-5 final. Taylor Babich picked up his second victory of the season. Rhodes is now 3-0 on the year.
Sophomore right hander Taylor Babich worked the first 5 innings on the way to his second victory of the season. On the day, Babich allowed 3 runs, 2 earned and struck out seven. Sophomore Hunter Chandler made his first appearance of the young season working three innings allowing 1 run and strikiing out one. Sophomore Matt Ungashick worked the ninth striking out 2 and allowed one earned run.
The Lynx offense continued its productive start of the season pounding out 12 hits, 5 for extra bases, and walked five times. Freshman CF Travis Perkins paced the Lynx offense from the leadoff spot going 3-6 with a triple, scored twice, drove in 3, and stole 2 bases. Sophomore 1B Brogan Jayne was 2-4 on the day with a double, scored 3 runs and walked once. Senior RF Mason Mosby was 1-3 with a homerun, one run scored, 2 RBIs, sac fly, and got hit by a pitch. Sophomore DH Matt Gilbert was 1-5 on the day with a homerun, run scored, and a RBI. Junior LF Brandon Valentine was 1-4 with 2 runs scored, 2 RBIs and stole 2 bases.
Rhodes will return to action tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 against Millsaps College in the final game of the Wilson/Demarini Classic. Both Rhodes and Millsaps are 2-0 this weekend.
