Lynx Take Game 1 of Wilson Demarini Classic

Defeat University of the Ozarks 15-8

The Rhodes College baseball team defeated the University of the Ozarks this afternoon 15-8 in Jackson, MS.  The Lynx used an 8 run bottom of the second to gain an 10-2 advantage and were able to stop several late rallies by Ozarks to hold onto the victory.  Senior Andy Holt picked up his first victory of the season working the first four innings.  The Lynx improve to 2-0 on the season.

Andy Holt made his first start of the young season going the first four innings in the designed pitcher by committee outing by the Lynx pitching staff.  Holt struck out 4 and walked no Ozark hitters.  Holt gave way to red-shirt freshman Brian Lainoff in the fifth.  Lainoff went 2.1 innings before senior Charles Simmons relieved Lainoff with one out in the top of the 7th.  Simmons only needed 4 pitches to get a huge double play to stop a Ozark rally.  Sophomore John Utt worked the eigth and freshman Colby Mattheson finished off the game in the ninth, striking out one.

The Lynx offense got things going early with a 2 run first and 8 run second.  Several Lynx had very solid days at the plate.  Senior 1B  Mason Mosby went 2-3 with a homerun, 1 RBI, 3 runs, and got hit twice.  Senior SS J.R. Bizzell was 2-5 with a double, 2 RBIs, 2 runs scored.  Sophomore 3B Brent Lindsey was 1-3 with 3 RBIs, 3 runs scored, got hit by a pitch, walked once, and stole a base.  Sophomore Matt Gilbert went 2-4 at the plate with a triple, walk, 1 RBI, and scored once.  Sophomore DH Kyle Peterson was 1-1 with a sac fly, 3 RBIs, scored a run, and got hit by a pitch.  Junior 2B Andy Boucher went 1-2 with a double, sac fly, 1 RBI, 2 runs scored, and got hit by a pitch.  Sophomore C Matt Frank went 2-3 with a double with a run scored.  Frank's bunt in the bottom of the second sparked the eight run inning.

The Lynx return to action tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 in the second game of the Wilson/Demarini Classic against LaGrange College.
