The Rhodes College Baseball team won the Rawlings Classic hosted by Emory University this weekend in Atlanta, GA going 4-0 with wins over Piedmont College, Greensboro College, Emory University, and North Carolina Wesleyan. Rhodes is now 9-2 on the year. Rhodes headed into their fourth game of the weekend needing to defeat North Carolina Wesleyan to secure the outright title and were able to do so with a 10-8 victory Sunday afternoon.
Rhodes knocked of Emory University in the first game Sunday 6-1 behind a strong pitching performance by Senior Andy Holt. Holt worked 6 innings, allowed 4 hits, struck out 4, walked one and did not allow a run. Senior Charles Simmons worked the final three frames, picking up his first save of the season. Simmons allowed 2 hits, 1 run, walked two, and struck out two.
Sophomore 3B Brent Lindsey paced the Lynx offense going 4-4 on the day with a homerun, double, drove in 3, scored once, and stole a base. Senior RF Mason Mosby went 2-4 at the plate, driving in 2.
In the second game of the day the Lynx defeated North Carolina Wesleyan 10-8. The game went back and forth for the first 6 innings before a four run bottom of the 7th put Rhodes up 10-6. The two teams played small ball for much of the game that included 7 sacrifice bunts, and seven stolen bases, six by the Lynx. Senior Mason Mosby was 4-4 with 3 RBIs, one run scored, walked once and stole two bases. Freshman CF Travis Perkins was 2-3 with a double, 3 runs scored, 1 RBI, walked once, and got hit by a pitch. Sophomore DH Matt Gilbert went 2-4 with a double, sac fly, drove in 2, and stole 2 bases. Sophomore C Chris Conkell went 2-4 with a run scored and stole a base. Sophomore Brogan Jayne was 2-5 at the plate with 2 runs scored and Brandon Valentine went 2-4 with a double, 2 RBIs, and one run scored. Valentine's double in the bottom of the 7th broke the 6-6 tie and gave Rhodes a lead they would hold onto for the remainder of the game.
Rhodes will return to action this weekend in the Rhodes College Classic as Millsaps College, LaGrange College, and Emory University come to Memphis. Saturday morning contest between Rhodes and Emory will mark the official opening of the newly renovated baseball complex.
