Rhodes Defeats Rust 11-1

The Rhodes baseball team defeated Rust College this afternoon at Stauffer Field.  The Rhodes offense started slow but eventually got things going with a 3 run fourth and 7 run fifth en route to a 11-1 victory in 8 innings.  Redshirt Freshman Brian Lainoff picked up his first career victory allowing one run in five innings. 

The Lynx pitching was effective all day allowing only 5 hits, striking out 10 and did not allow any walks.  Brian Lainoff worked the first five innings allowing 4 hits, one run, struck out 6 and did not allow a walk. From there on out the Lynx bullpen consisting of Hunter Chandler, Max Gertz and Jhonny Utt allowed only  two runners to reach base in final three frames.

The Lynx offense got things going with a 3 run bottom of the fourth, 7 run fifth and scored the final run to enact the mercy rule with a Brooks Royer sac fly in the bottom of the eighth.  Sophomore C Chris Conkell was 3-3 with 2 doubles, 2 runs scored, an RBI, and stole a base.  Sophomore 1B Brogan Jayne went 2-4 with an RBI and scored twice.  Freshman CF Travis Perkins was 1-3 with a double, drove in one, 2 runs, walked once, and stole a base.  Senior SS J.R. Bizzell drove in 2, scored once and walked twice.

Rhodes will return to action this weekend in Atlanta, GA for the Rawlings Classic.  Rhodes will take on Piedmont College Friday afternoon, Greensboro College on Saturday, and Emory University and North Carolina Wesleyan on Sunday.
