Lynx Fall to Tigers

10/10/2009 7:09:11 PM

DePauw put up 21 points in each of the first and fourth quarters  but the Tigers interim foot ball coach Robby Long didn't want his players looking at the scoreboard.
“As a coach, you try to guard that as much as you can. Bad things tend to happen when you look at the scoreboard. That can't happen If we are going to continue to do the things in this conference we want to do,” said Long.
Players were allowed to look at the final score. DePauw defeated Rhodes 52-26 in a Southern Collegeiate Athletic Conference game on Saturday at Fargason Field.
DePauw quarterback Spud Dick completed 25 of 36 passes for 343 yards and threw six touchdown passes, two to receiver Alex Koors, with an offense that Long expects to score points.
DePauw running back Derrick Karazsia, who scored a 10-yard fourth quarter touchdown and had a game-high 96 yards on 16 carries, said, “There were no surprises at all. We know we wanted to come out, run the ball and play action and throw.”
“ Scoring points is something I look for,” said Long, whose team is 4-1 and 3-1 in the SCAC.So does Rhodes quarterback Brett Stoots .
Stoots had a season-high 250 yards on 21 of 34 completions and a touchdown toss to Derek King. Tyler Perkins completed 6 of 7 passes for 59 yards to give the Lynx 309 yards passing.
“I don't think we played well in the first half. For 30 minutes we played pretty well. But against a good team like that you've got to execute 60 minutes, not 30,” said White, whose team didn't throw in the towel despite falling behind 28-0 with 2 minutes left in the first half.
Dick threw four touchdown passes in the first half, a 9-yarder to Anthony Meek, a 23-yarder to x Koors, an 11-yarder to Bryan Mulligan, a 4-yarder to Brayden Dahlstrom.
Derek King caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from Stoots with 3 seconds left in the first half to provide a spark. Stoots completed four straight passes, including a 39-yard pass to Jacob Papermaster, to set up the score.
From watching Lynx game film, Long knew it wasn't over at halftime.”They fight to the very end. We get that out of them every time we play them,” he said.
After the game, White told his team he was impressed. “For 99 percent of the time, we battled and played with the effort it takes to win. That is hard when you fall behind quickly like we did. I was impressed and proud of them for how they kept fighting. They showed pride. We tried to climb out way out and made them work for it. They couldn't say this game is over.”
Rhodes (2-4, 0-2 in the SCAC) was battling the SCAC team with the most balanced offense. “They may be the best offense in our league,” said White. “They're a big, tough group and mix the run and pass well. They picked on us a little bit. Give them credit. They made their plays and got the win. When you get behind like that there is very little room for error. They never had any slow down. They played good for 60 minutes. That made them tough to deal with.”
Dick was the SCAC Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 3 after passing for 372 yards in a victory over Millsaps. “I've said this 100 times and will say it again, he's a leader that happens to be a quarterback,” said Long.
Rhodes rushed for 100 yards with Josh McMurray gaining 54 and scoring a touchdown in his first game since a pre-season knee injury. His 2-yard TD run came with 4:39 left in the fourth.
Matt Gilbert scored two touchdowns for the Lynx, a 2-yard run with 2:10 left in the third quarter and 1-yard run with 10:42 left in the game.Dick threw fourth quarter touchdown passes to Koors ( 28 yards) and Nathan Evans (5 yards).
“We didn't do a whole lot of things really special. We were able to put some points because everybody did their job,” said Dick. “The second and third quarter they were able to get under our skin. The first and fourth quarters we got back to basics and really attack them.”
Rhodes' late second quarter drive got the Lynx into rhythm said Stoots. “That gave us a lot of momentum.” The game will provide momentum for a “great opportunity to surprise somebody,” said Stoots The Lynx play Millsaps Saturday.
Said White, “We've got to come out of the blocks making plays.”
