Rhodes and Hardin-Simmons Tie in Women's Soccer Action

9/6/2008 4:28:41 PM

The Rhodes Women's Soccer Team and the Cowgirls of Hardin-Simmons University played to a 1-1 tie in the second game of the SCAC/ASC Women's Soccer Classic in Memphis.  Jessie Cassidy scored the game's opening goal and HSU's Amy Kuykendall answered 7 minutes later.  Despite several chances on both ends during the course of the second half and two overtime periods, neither team could break the tie.

Jessie Cassidy opened the scoring for the Lynx in the 26th minute when she knocked home a ball past goalkeeper Christi Carr from inside the penalty area that the Cowgirls were unable to clear after a Rhodes corner kick.

The Cowgirls answered in the 33rd minute when Mickey Rogers played the ball to Amy Kuykendall and after a bit of individual effort put the ball past Rhodes keeper Becca Clarin to bring HSU level.

Rhodes defense led by seniors Katy Joyner, Diana Buss and Lizzie Wright as well as junior Colleen Callaghan helped keep HSU off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game.

The Lynx came very close to a game winner in the final seconds of regulation when the Cowgirls cleared a Wright shot off the goal line to preserve the tie and force extra time.

Rhodes is now 2-0-1 in 2008 and will face the Tigers of East Texas Baptist University at 1pm on Sunday, September 7, 2008 at Rhodes.
