Sewanee Hands Field Hockey First Loss

9/28/2008 3:40:19 PM

The story was too little too late for the Lynx today in their first conference game at home, a 3-1 loss to rival Sewanee.  Rhodes made a strong final push, scoring a goal and having a second goal called back in the last 10 minutes of play today but it was not enough to overcome the three early Sewanee goals.

Sewanee scored their first goal just two and a half minutes into play on a shot that deflected off of a Lynx defender's leg into the goal.  The Tigers followed with a second goal 20 minutes into first half play on a rebound shot from a scramble around the goal cage.  Sewanee struck again scoring on a penalty corner opportunity only two minutes into second half play.  The Lynx pressured the Sewanee defense with several great runs in the middle and late parts of the second half and were able to convert on a spectacular shot by Charlie Wagner on an assist from Morgan Jane Mischer with nine minutes to play.  Rhodes was able to win several late penalty corners and converted on one with 4 minutes to play but the goal was called back due to height on the shot (must be below 18 inches).  The Lynx had several strong individual efforts on the day including a fantastic performance by Laura Deines at sweeper.

Despite the fact that Sewanee controlled the pace for much of the game the Lynx were able to hold a 7-6 advantage in penalty corners as well as out shoot the Tiger 11-8.  Rhodes (7-1, 1-1 SCAC) will return to action at home on Saturday (10/4, 11 am) against Transylvania and Sunday (10/5, 1 pm) versus conference foe Hendrix.
