Lynx Defeat UTD in Women's Soccer Action

8/31/2008 3:23:18 PM

The Rhodes Women's soccer team earned a hard fought victory over The University of Texas at Dallas by a score of 2-1 on the second day of competition in the 2008 Rhodes College Classic in Memphis, TN.  A couple of first half goals by senior forward Melanie Sharry and freshman forward Laura Flink gave the Lynx all the scoring they would need to secure their 2nd victory in as many games in 2008.

Sharry scored just 3 minutes into the game when senior defender Lizzie Wright sent a freekick into the penalty area which the Comets failed to clear before Sharry knocked the ball past the UTD keeper.  UTD would pull level in the 26th minute when Leah Bowyer broke through the Lynx and slotted the ball past Rhodes goalkeeper Becca Clarin.

With just under 4 minutes to go in the first half, Flink poked in a ball served from a corner by freshman forward Ashley Ladd to give the Lynx the go ahead goal and her first game winner in a Rhodes uniform.

Freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Sermonet made a big save with under a minute left in the game to help preserve the win behind the Lynx backline anchored by seniors Katy Joyner, Wright and Kathleen Perniciaro and the strong play of junior Colleen Callaghan, freshmen Zoe Clark, Caroline Colpoys and Sarah Doherty.

Rhodes improves to 2-0-0 in 2008 and will face the Cowgirls of Hardin-Simmons University on Saturday, September 6 at 1:00pm on campus in Memphis.
