The Lynx softball team split a doubleheader with the Millsaps Majors this afternoon in Memphis. Millsaps took game 1 by a score of 6-3, while the Lynx bounced back to claim game 2 by a score of 5-0 behind a 2-hit shutout from senior Dana Bartolomei.
Rhodes jumped out to a 1-0 lead in game 1, scoring a run in the bottom of the first. Freshman Allison Conn led off the game with a single, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Senior Amanda Lutzy. Conn would then score on a single by Senior Dana Bartolomei. The Majors tied the game in the 3rd on a solo home run by Katherine Nicholas, then took a 4-1 lead in the 5th when they scored 3 runs on 3 hits.
Aided by a pair of Lynx errors, Millsaps plated 2 more runs in the 6th, taking a 6-1 lead into the bottom of the 6th. Sophomore Karli Alvino and Conn led off the bottom of the 6th with back to back singles for the Lynx, and would later score to get the Lynx within 3 at 6-3. But, that is all of the offense the Lynx could muster as Majors starter Kasey Thibodeaux sat the Lynx down in order in the 7th.
Freshman Sara Bowen took the loss in the circle for the Lynx in her college debut. Bowen gave up 8 hits and allowed 4 earned runs, but did strike out 14 in the loss. Conn was 2-3 in the game and scored 2 runs.
In game 2, Rhodes again scored first, with first inning doubles from Conn and Bartolomei to give the Lynx a 1-0 lead after the first inning. Freshman Hillary Relyea led off the second inning with a walk, and Senior Savannah Deaton slapped a single past the third baseman to give the Lynx runners at first and second with 1 out. Conn delivered again with a double to left center to score Relyea, and Lutzy followed with an RBI single to score Deaton. Conn would score on a wild pitch, and after being hit by a pitch, Bartolomei would move around the bases and later score on a wild pitch, giving the Lynx a 5-0 lead after 2 innings.
Those 5 runs were more than enough for Bartolomei, who went on to strike out 10 Majors en route to tossing a 3-hit shutout, picking up her second victory of the year. Conn again led the Lynx offesnsively, going 4-4 with a pair of doubles, 2 runs scored and an RBI.
The Lynx are back in action Tuesday at 1pm at home against Maranatha Baptist Bible College.
