Rhodes opened 2008 with a great first half, but fell short in the final twenty minutes, losing 67-58 to Birmingham Southern on Saturday, January 5th at Mallory Gymnasium. The Lynx finished the first half on a 27-10 run to take a 31-22 lead into intermission. However, the Panthers a provisional member of NCAA Division III, countered with a 19-4 run to start the second half, and rallied for a 41-35 lead.
The Lynx countered again with a 12-6 run to tie the game for the final time at 47-47 on senior guard Ashley Farrell's three point basket with 9:11 to play in the contest. The Panthers were led by former Division I All-Big South Conference performer Reba Ross, who led all scorers with 27 points and pulled down a game high 12 rebounds. Birmingham Southern outscored the Lynx 20-11 over the final eight minutes for the victory.
"Without question this was a great effort by our kids. We confused them in the first half with our various defensive schemes, but give Coach Hodge and his staff alot of credit. In the second half they made some crucial adjustments, and were able to get Ross going," said Lynx Head Coach Matt Dean. "They utilized her on the perimeter, and when Reba started making three point baskets, it deflated our kids, and gave them the spark they needed."
The Lynx fall to 5-5 overall and face the University of Dallas in a non-conference game Tuesday in Mallory Gymnasium at 2 pm. Farrell led all Lynx with 18 points and sophomore Becca Clarin added 11 points and 8 rebounds.
