Cross Country Women 5th at NCAA Regional Championships

11/12/2005

The Lynx women's cross country team tied for 5th out of 22 teams at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional Championships in Conway, Arkansas. Team captain May King led the team for the fifth time this season, as she finished 13th out of 150 runners in the meet. Emory won the meet with just 26 points, ahead of Trinity (111), Mary Washington (136), Washington and Lee (138), and Rhodes and Christopher Newport (both 147). Rhodes placed 2nd among SCAC teams, and in the process earned a bit of revenge against SCAC foes Centre and Southwestern, both of whom edged the Lynx at the SCAC Championships two weeks earlier. Hendrix senior Julie Coats won the meet with a time of 21:57 on her home course.

May King ended her collegiate cross country career on a high note with her best-ever Regional meet finish. The senior had previously placed just 35th, 50th, and 90th in the last 3 Regional Championships. King's time of 23:16 was a 6,000 meter personal best, which left her only 20 seconds shy of a berth in the NCAA National Championships. Junior Lizzie Phillips finished 5 seconds behind King in 23:21 to place 16th. Phillips also earned a personal best and her best Regional meet finish. She finished 47th at Regionals as a freshman and missed the Regional meet her sophomore year due to injury. Courtney Cockerell placed 28th overall with a time of 23:46. King, Phillips, and Cockerell all earned All-Region honors for their top-35 finishes. Nici Thomas and Rachel Simpson closed out Rhodes' scoring by placing 47th and 49th overall in 24:29 and 24:30. Sara LaPlante and Jessye Bobinis rounded out the Lynx top 7 by placing 52nd and 100th.
