Rhodes Women 4th, Brandewiede 2nd at SCAC Championships

The women's cross country team finished 4th at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships, hosted by DePauw University. Senior team captain Marie Brandewiede led the Lynx with her runner-up finish. DePauw won the meet with 44 points, ahead of Centre College (68), Trinity University (77) and Rhodes (92). Millsaps College (155) edged the University of the South (160) for 5th place out of 9 scoring teams. DePauw junior Natalie Shaffer defended her SCAC title with a winning time of 18:42 over the rolling 5,000 meter LaVern Gibson course in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Brandewiede cruised through the first mile with the lead pack before using a late race surge to beat all but Shaffer in the 67 athlete race. Her time of 18:51 was just 1 second shy of her cross country best for 5,000 meters, and her 2nd place individual finish was the top SCAC placing and 3rd All-SCAC finish in Brandewiede's cross country career. Her SCAC cross country finishes over the last 4 years have been 19th (2000), 5th (2001), 5th (2002) and 2nd (2003). Senior Cheryl Finster and freshman Jennifer Emo joined Brandewiede as All-SCAC honorees for their top 14 finishes. Finster was 8th in 19:39, and Emo was 14th in 19:49. Lizzie Phillips (36th overall in 21:08) and May King (40th overall in 21:33) closed out the Lynx scoring, while Abbey Walker (41st) and Caroline Owens (47th) rounded out the squad's top 7.
