Rhodes Women Advance to NCAA Championship

The Rhodes women's cross country team earned 2nd at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional Championship, hosted by Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Emory University scored 58 points to win the Regional title for the 12th consecutive year. Rhodes' 79 points were enough for a 2nd place finish, and a qualification for the national meet--as the top two women's teams in the region qualified for the NCAA Championships next weekend in Northfield, Minnesota.

This is the first time in Rhodes cross country history that they will be represented by a full team at the NCAA Championships. At the regional meet, Trinity University, Mary Washington College, and Roanoke College rounded out the top 5 of 21 complete teams. Emory sophomore Angela Davie held off all challengers for the individual victory in a time of 21:53 over the rain-soaked and muddy 5960-meter course at John L. Pratt Park.

The Lynx were once again led by their trio of frontrunners, as Amy Paine, Elizabeth Wester, and Marie Brandewiede placed 3rd, 5th, and 6th, with times of 22:12, 22:29, and 22:34, respectively. All 3 runners earned All-Region (top 25) honors for the second year in a row. Last year, Wester and Paine finished 3rd and 6th at the Regional meet to qualify for the NCAA Championships as individuals, where they placed 53rd and 118th overall in Rock Island, Illinois. Brandewiede, a track and field All-American (1500 meters) will compete in her first NCAA Cross Country Championships. Freshmen Haley McConaghy (31st in 24:10) and May King (34th in 24:14) closed out Rhodes' scoring. Seniors Lauren Glas and Betsy Bogler rounded out the Lynx top seven by taking 36th and 46th, respectively. Glas finished in the top one-fourth of all runners in her first ever Regional Championship meet. This was the first 6-kilometer race of the season for Rhodes. The NCAA Championships will also be contested over a 6-kilometer course.
