Men's Tennis wins thriller to reach finals of SAA

4/30/2013 10:33:00 AM

Both the men's and women's tennis teams found themselves in the semi-finals of the conference tournament.

The men started off the day against #2 seed Oglethorpe University. When they played earlier in the season OU came out victorious 7-2.

This was a much different atmosphere than the first time the two teams played. "The guys really believed we were the better team that day and they showed it by the way the played. From the first point in the doubles until the last point of the singles, the guys played with confidence.", said Coach Mann after Graham clinched the match.

The day started with the Lynx taking 2 out of 3 doubles points. This gave the guys momentum going into singles play. Sanders Phelps started off the day by giving the Lynx their 3rd point by defeating his OU opponent 6-2, 6-2 in dominating fashion.

Rob Steinwedell played the match of his season and defeated last years conference 9th place finisher for player of the year in straigh sets, 6-4, 6-2. Rob used the indoor courts to his advantage with his huge kick serve that opened the court up for the rest of the point.

With these two wins the match scored was tied up 4-4 with freshman Graham Sowden on the court but down a set. Once Graham realized the match was coming down to him he elevated his level of play quickly. He took the second set 6-2 after only 25 minutes. The whole match was down to the third set of his his court. After 2.5 hours of battling back and forth, Graham earned the first match points of the match at 4-5 returning serve. His opponent came up huge on two consecutive points to even the match back at 5-5. On his serve, down 30-40 Graham hit the shot of the tournament. His opponent ripped a return into the backhand corner and came in with a volley to the open court, his Oglethorpe teammates already started cheering because they thought the point was over. Graham, out of nowhere, came sliding into the ball and hit an incredible lob that hit the baseline that his opponent couldn't even get close to, in order to save a breakpoint.

The match came down to 6-6, a tiebreaker, and winner of this tiebreaker moves on to the finals of the SAA tournament. Graham started off strong in the breaker and never looked back. He held a lead the entire time. Graham started up 2-0, then a few points later he was up 4-3 returning serve. He played two incredible points to give him his third and fourth match points of the day at 6-3. He failed to serve it out as his opponent came up with two winners down two match points. At 6-5 returning serve, Graham barely got his racket on a return, ripped his next groundstroke, and his opponent sailed a forehand long. His teammates rushed the court in celebration because Rhodes had just defeated OU 5-4 to go into the finals as the #3 seed.

"The atmosphere was incredible. Everyone played with guts and left it all out on the court. This was the most exciting match I have ever been a part", said Coach Mann.

The Lynx moved on to face Sewanee in the finals of the tournament and fell short on the home courts of the Tigers. A second place finish in two consecutive seasons will surely be motivation to train harder for next season and take the title back from Sewanee.
