Lynx defeat Mississippi College

4/20/2013 4:07:00 PM

On Saturday, April 20th, the Lynx men and women faced Mississippi College.

The Lady Lynx took care of business with a 8-1 vicotry. The doubles started off well with #1 doubles duo of Maggie Donoghue and Emily Rizer winning 8-4. With Courtney Hornsby still hurt, Julia Green stepped up at #2 doubles to partner with the hard hitting McIsaac to win their match 8-0. Kristal Skrmetta and Elyse Smith were able to grind there way to an 8-6 victory to complete the sweep in doubles.

It was much more of the same in the singles. Maggie Donoghue, Amelia McIsaac, and Emily Rizer all had routine straight set victories playing at the 1, 2, and 3 singles positions respectively. It was a little tougher at the bottom of the line-up, especially with Elle and Courtney out of the line-up due to injuries. At #4 singles, Elyse Smith stepped up to defeat her Mississippi College opponent 6-3, 6-3 in a well played match. The #5 and #6 matches both went to third set ten point tiebreakers with Julia Greene winning it 10-7. The only point of the day for MC came at #5 with a 10-7 win in the match tiebreaker.

The men had a bit of a tougher route than the women against MC.

In the doubles Rhodes took only one of the points. Junior Colin Perry and freshman Eliot Blatt paired up to win the match 8-3. At #1 Rob and Sanders lost a very close match in a tiebreaker, losing 7-5 in the breaker. The third doubles line also lost a very close match 9-7.

In the singles though the Lynx men came out firing. The day started with Sanders Phelps earning the first singles point by a score of 7-5, 6-2. Eliot Blatt then came up with a solid victory from the #3 spot to win his match 6-2, 6-4 after going down 0-3 in the second set. This brought the the overall score to 3-2 in favor of Rhodes. Unfortunately, at #2 and #4 singles the Lynx lost tough matches. Colin from the #2 spot lost 6-3, 6-4 but he had his chances to get back in the second set. Greyson at #4 was dealing with an abdominal injury and couldn't quite hit his full serve, allowing his opponent to dictate play when Greyson served. Brilliant was still able to battle and stay in the set but fell just short losing 6-3, 6-4.

The match came down to the very last two courts. Rob Steinwedell and Graham Sowden came on to the court knowing both of them had to win in order to secure the victory. Graham Sowden took care of business first winning 6-1, 6-0. His firepower off the ground proved to be too much to handle as he made quick work of his opponent. Rob played his attacking style of tennis to win his match in a decisive 6-1, 6-2 victory.

This match concludes regular season play for Lynx tennis. Their next competition will be in Murfreesboro, TN on Friday, April 26th for the SAA conference tournament. The Lynx women go in as the #2 seed while the Lynx men secure the #3 spot.

Good luck Rhodes!
